Information Pack

I've recently been reading through an information pack on Industrial Light and Magic where it gave biographical information on the crew members and the directors involved and how they were able to achieve the effects and goals needed. A brief history of the company was also included as well. So far it has given me an idea about some of the things I could include in my research, and I have just recievd a copy of the pack for myself to use so that I can make furhter notes, select information to reference, and so forth.

Small-scale research proposal

The question will be researching for in this project will be: ‘What was the subsequent impact of Industrial Light and Magic since Star Wars?’, and for my question I will be researching into the technology Industrial Light and Magic has developed for films such as Star Wars and subsequent films following it, and how this technology has been used. I will also be looking into the importance of Industrial Light and Magic and study how subsequent companies have either copied or been inspired by the technology made by the company.

My chosen focus film related to this question will be ‘Star Wars’ (1977), and I will be choosing ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ (1991), ‘Jurassic Park’ (1993), and ‘Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest’ (2006) as my supporting films for this research. I will be using these films as examples of Industrial Light and Magic’s involvement in the special effects for these films.

My catalogue items will include:

·         Glintenkamp, Pamela, Industrial Light & Magic: The Art of Innovation, 1st November 2011
·         Benyahia, Sarah Casey, Freddie Gaffney, and John White, A2 Film Studies: The Essential Introduction (Essentials), 29th April 2009

I am choosing these items because they both contain information that could assist me with my research for this project, with ‘Industrial Light & Magic: The Art of Innovation’ being important since it contains information on the company and their progress throughout the years.

Finding some sources

I had came across the website for the company Industrial Light and Magic for my small-scale research, and it has given me an idea as to which films I shall properly focus on, although I would double-check the company's involvement with a particular film before I make a final decision. I'll mention my focus film choices for my research once I have come to a final decision. For now, here is the link for the company's website:

http://www.ilm.com/

I have also decided to quickly research books regarding the company's work, with Amazon being the most obvious (yet useful) place to look for them. So far, it appears reviews for some of these materials have been positive and I will be happy to purchase them as soon as possible, although I will also look into my college library to find texts which could contain useful and valuable information for my research.
